BEHIND THE ILLUSTRATION

The Red-Tailed Hawk

Despite the name, there’s much more to identifying a Red-tailed Hawk than looking for a red tail. Their plumage is remarkably variable, changing with age, region, and color morph—and juveniles haven’t developed the familiar red tail at all.

This pen-and-ink illustration began as a study of the field marks visible when a Red-tail passes overhead. Broad, rounded wings and a short, wide tail help establish its silhouette, while many light-morph birds show dark patagial marks along the leading edge of the underwing and a band of darker streaking across the belly.

Drawn without color, the study shifts attention away from the bird’s namesake feature and toward the shape, pattern, and placement of the markings that help tell you what you’re looking at.
